Current challenges of the Amazon rainforest
The Amazon rainforest is the largest tropical jungle ecosystem in the world and home to almost fifty thousand species of flora and fauna. However, each of these species currently faces challenges that affect both their life cycle and the future of the Amazon as a whole.
One of these challenges is the disruption of climate cycles due to global warming. This results in very long periods of drought, such as last year, when the river recorded its lowest level in 120 years. Life in the Amazon is not fully adapted to these conditions, and some species have disappeared.
Another challenge is the illegal appropriation of rainforest territories for activities that affect the ecosystem and endanger its balance:
- Agriculture without exploitation permits
- Illegal mining
- Excessive logging
- Cultivation of illicit plants
Many of the rainforest’s species struggle daily to survive in this type of environment, and some of them see their natural habitats displaced or eliminated. That is why every day counts when it comes to promoting the preservation of the Amazon.
From your position in the city, here are some ways you can do so.
