The Amazon giant sloth's 20 stress-free years
This species is endemic to the Amazon and famous for being synonymous with tranquility. The Amazon giants sloths live their entire lives (20 years) without making any rapid movements. That´s because the giant sloth’s muscles are not designed for fast movement, but rather to hold onto trees for as long as they need to, even when sleeping (15-18 hours per day) or giving birth.
This unique characteristic allows them to live in the treetops and blend in with their surroundings, to the point that large predators such as jaguars have difficulty hunting them.
Their slow metabolism also protects them. They only need to eat once every three days and defecate once every seven days, which reduces their vulnerability to predators.
And… after 20 years of eating, sleeping, and enjoying the jungle, the sloth finally dies, old and in the same calm state in which it lived.
Remember that in order to preserve, you need to know what you are caring for. That is why, at Selvática, we are committed to showing you all the richness of the species that inhabit the Amazon.
